A few years ago I wrote a book about the construction business of which I have been a part of, on and off, since 1974 (it is on Amazon and the other book sites for a very reasonable price). The title is “A Contractor Tells All: A Guide to Saving Money & Avoiding Trouble on Your Next Home Project”. The title says it all. After I understand a customer’s painting needs I try to devise a strategy so that they can clearly understand what I am proposing to do to solve their problems in the most efficient and cost-effective way.
My goal is simple. If I do good work at a fair price and possibly find additional ways to save my customers money along the way they will call me back for more work. And with painting there are always future projects. Since, I am an “old school” guy (at 62) I like to work, but not in an office or a cubicle; I like to please and sometimes amaze people with our finished product and I like to make a living at something I enjoy.
So, the goal is always to keep working and hopefully learn new painting skills as time goes by. All of the other “old school” tradesmen I know feel the same way about their work. You cannot get rich as a tradesman unless you try to gouge and cheat nearly every customer you have. But then if you cheat every customer you will soon have no customers, nor a reputation or a business. So, people like me just want to keep working at a steady pace, earn a fair living, make happy customers into friends, keep tension, drama and mistakes to a minimum and enjoy family, children and grandchildren.
